Air Defender 23 was the largest deployment exercise of air forces in the history of NATO. Up to 10,000 soldiers from 25 nations trained the joint response capability in a crisis situation. Germany took the leading role and was the logistical hub. No less than 250 transport, surveillance and combat aircraft took part, deployed to various locations in Germany. The U.S. National Guard alone deployed 100 aircraft to Europe for the maneuver. For the first time, the German Air Force specially decorated an Airbus A400M from its Air Transport Wing 62 based at Wunstorf, underlining the importance of close cooperation and coordination between NATO partners.
