■ Operating condition: 1990s at the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn
■ Special series “Pinzgauer Lokalbahn”
At the beginning of the 20th century, powerful narrow gauge Mh class supporting locomotives were purchased for the Mariazell railway mountain line. The high volume of passengers led to the electrification of the line to Mariazell and Gusswerk after only a few years. As a result, the Mh, which was re-designated by ÖBB as class 399 in 1953, were also used on other Austrian narrow gauge railways. After 1990, they were gradually retired to ÖBB nostalgia stock.
The 399.01, the oldest machine of this class, was in service in the Waldviertel region for many years. In the 1990s, it was used on the charming Pinzgauer Lokalbahn with the special steam trains. The Pinzgauer Lokalbahn line runs through one of Austria’s most popular tourist regions from Zell am See through the upper Salzach Valley to Krimml. The impressive Krimml Waterfalls create a lot of tourist traffic.
