Similar to the well-known television tower located in Alexanderplatz in Berlin. A model of impressive height with glazed spherical dome, red-white pole and a red-blinking beacon at the top.
The Berlin TV tower rises an impressive 368 meters into the sky not far from Alexanderplatz. In 1964, the Central Committee of the SED decided to build the tower right in the center of what was then East Berlin. In 1965, the concrete pouring of the foundation and shaft, which reached a depth of five meters, began. The characteristic tower sphere was then assembled at a height of almost 200 meters, the individual steel segments of which were hoisted up by a crane – the crane is still there today, although its boom is folded down. On October 3, 1969, the tower, whose construction cost 200 million East German marks, was six times more than the estimated costs, was opened. Today, the Berlin TV tower belongs to Deutsche Funkturm GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. The enormous sphere, which has a diameter of 32 meters and weighs 4,600 tons, houses the broadcasting technology, an observation deck and a revolving café. Around a million people a year take the lifts up to the top, including couples who get married up here. The 118-meter-high antenna, marked in white and red and heated in winter, houses, among other things, VHF transmitters, the latest systems for digital terrestrial television (DVB-T) and digital radio transmitters.
